Can you teach old dogs new tricks?

Procedure:

  1. Find a quiet place with few distractions like a driveway or side street.
  2. Call the dog to your left side while walking slowly away from them.
  3. When the dog's shoulder is about even with your leg, say, "Heel," and give the dog a treat. Also, start the timer. When the dog moves away, stop the time, but DO NOT RESET IT.
  4. After taking 2-3 steps, reward the dog if they are still walking beside you. Also, praise the dog by saying, "Good girl/boy!" If the dog is about to move away, say, "Heel," again while rewarding.
  5. If the dog moves away, turn and repeat step 3.
  6. Continue steps 3-5 for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Record the length of the training session and the time the dog spent at heel.
  8. Repeat with the second dog.
  9. After about 3 sessions with each dog, wait a little longer between rewards for remaining at heel, gradually increasing it as the dog stays at heel for longer periods of time.
